Today we welcome Ruth Harrison, Programme Manager at The Reading Agency, to tell us about Reading Groups for Everyone
Launched in March 2011, Reading Groups for Everyone is spreading the word and celebrating all the great things that reading groups, book clubs and writing groups offer. It is run by The Reading Agency, the independent charity with a mission to get more people reading more in partnership with the Society of Chief Librarians.
Our ambition is that Reading Groups for Everyone becomes the place where anyone can come to find information about reading groups in their area. Where people who are running reading groups can find support, resources and evidence, plus offers and events their group can benefit from. And where everyone can learn more about the many ways reading groups can make a difference to people and their communities.
There are now over 2,000 library run and private reading groups and book clubs signed up to the site from right across the UK – you can see Glasgow groups which have already registered here – and we’d love to see all your groups signed up. There are groups for children to young people, adults to women only, visually impaired to English as a Second Language as well as crime, historical fiction, chic lit and non-fiction groups taking place in libraries, bookshops, community centres, pubs, churches, bakeries, cafes, schools, work places, theatres, hospitals, prisons, cinemas, online or, of course, people’s homes.
Through Reading Groups for Everyone we push out offers from our partners which reading groups can take part in. These range from getting hold of reading group sets of books that are about to be published through to competitions and special reading group projects. Here are some current ones that are up on the site:
- Galaxy National Book Awards reading group competition where you can win 8 iPads for your reading group by creating a short video review of the shortlisted crime and thriller titles
- Search for our Dickens Champions – we are looking for 10 reading groups who are passionate about Charles Dickens and would like to celebrate his bi-centenary in style!
- Getting ready for National Reading Group Day on 30 June 2012
Reading Groups for Everyone is also about supporting people to start and run and continue running their own reading groups and book clubs. We are building up a bank of tips and stories for people to get advice and inspiration from. Here’s a taster of some that you can find on the site:
- Running a reading group for adult learners
- Shadowing the Orange Prize
- Running an online reading group
If you have reading group tips or a story to share do get in touch with us at email@example.com as we are always looking for features to put up on the site.
So, if you have ever thought about joining a reading group do take a look and see if there is one that you would like to join or if you run one please do add it to the site (you don’t have to show all your group details if you don’t want to).
We look forward to welcoming you as part of the Reading Groups for Everyone community.
